Our History

On April 12, 1967, eighteen Christians came together in Tacoma to organize a church. Reverend James D. Stinson was called to be the pastor. The church was then given the name, “Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.”

Galilee’s first service was held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Hall on July 2, 1967.  In 1973, God blessed His people with our current place of worship at 5802 Puget Sound.

As the founder of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Stinson has steadfastly and enthusiastically preached and taught the Word of God and led the congregation. He has been a true inspiration to Galilee and the community. Due to health challenges, Pastor Stinson invited Reverend Dr. Steven Lee Sr. to join him in the pastoral duties of the church in 2009. After much prayer and supplication, Pastor Stinson passed on the leadership of Galilee to Rev. Lee and he was installed as Pastor on April 26 with Pastor Stinson distinguished as Pastor Emeritus. On Sunday, May 31, 2009, Pastor Stinson was formally celebrated as Pastor Emeritus during the Founders Day Appreciation Service.

When Galilee reopened after its two year closing, there were many challenging hurdles to overcome. The Lord has shown great favor we have increased from 11 members to our current roll of 70 members and growing. Our CD, outreach, marriage counseling and praise dance ministries are evidence of how God continues to bless Galilee Missionary Baptist Church as we unwaveringly carry on the work of Christ by spreading the Gospel and loving one another as He commanded.
